| １月２０日に、ブックセールを開催しました。保護者会主催で、各ご家庭からご寄贈いただいた本などが、どれも１冊（１つ）25セントで販売され、収益は保護者会活動（＝生徒たち）のために用いられます。
先週から多くの本が持ち込まれていましたが、この日の朝も、保護者の皆さんが、キャンプに行くときにつかうカートに本を積んで持ってくださり、あっという間に、ブックセール会場の広いカフェテリアの３分の１が埋まってしまいました。ネバダ州でこれほど一ヵ所に日本語の本が集まる機会は他にはないだろうと言っても過言ではありません。 ブックセール係の保護者の方が、テキパキと本を分類して並べて準備ができると、朝から待ちきれなかった生徒たちが順番にショッピングです。特に幼稚部の子供たちは、現金を使って、自分の好きな本を買うことができることが楽しくてたまらないようでした。 補習校の大きな役割の１つに、生徒たちが「日本の日常生活で使われる日本語」に触れる機会をできるだけ多く提供することがあります。日本にいたら当たり前のシチュエーションで使われる当たり前の日本語表現であっても、海外在住の子供たちにとってはとても新鮮なことです。そして、これがとても限られた「生の日本語」に触れるチャンスなのです。 特に幼稚部の先生方は、子供たちが少しでも「日本にいたら当たり前に触れるはずの表現」に触れることができるようにと、さまざまな工夫をして下さっています。 幼稚部の先生方から提出された「指導記録」には、どの先生も、子供たちが大喜びだったことと、このような機会が貴重であることが書かれていました。 |
On January 20, we held an annual “Book Sale”. Sponsored by the PTA, books and other items donated by students’ families were sold for 25 cents each, with the proceeds going to PTA activities (i.e., for the benefits of the students).
Many books had been brought in since last week, and on the morning of the sale, more parents brought in carts of more books. It is no exaggeration to say that there is no other opportunity in Nevada to have such a large collection of Japanese books in one place. Once the parents at the book sale had the books sorted and ready to go, the students, who had been waiting impatiently since the morning, took their turn to shop. The children, especially those in kindergarten, seemed to enjoy using their hard money to buy books of their choice. One of the main goals of Las Vegas Gakuen is to provide students with as many opportunities as possible to come into contact with the Japanese language used in everyday life in Japan. Even everyday Japanese expressions used in situations that would be commonplace in Japan are very new to children living abroad. And this is one of the very limited opportunities to be exposed to “live Japanese”. The teachers, especially in the kindergarten department, make various efforts to expose the children to expressions that they would encounter daily if they were in Japan. In the “teaching reports” submitted by the kindergarten teachers, all the teachers wrote that the children were overjoyed and that this kind of opportunity was very valuable. |
