Is Las Vegas Gakuen… Okay? I was all set to enjoy a quiet, invisible retirement—low profile, no fuss—when out of nowhere someone asked, “Would you consider becoming Board Chair?” That was two years ago, and my peaceful “fade into the background” plan went straight down the drain. These days, people stop me and ask, “Wait, are you the Chair of Las Vegas Gakuen?” Yep. So much for being invisible. Over these two years, I’ve been asked the same handful of questions over and over: Confession: I thought all of these myself when I first started. Which is exactly why I pushed through a bunch of changes—fast. Here’s where we are now. Was it really on the brink? When I came in, the school had been in the red for five straight years. COVID hit hard, reserves were nearly gone—it was a sinking ship. Full emergency mode. We reviewed every expense, no sacred cows. What’s worth funding? What’s not? How do we prioritize? Teacher pay really that low? Oh yes. One raise had been… six cents. I thought it was a typo. We’ve since given the largest base pay increase in school history. Sure, our staff aren’t here for the money—they give their time and talent out of dedication. But relying on goodwill alone isn’t sustainable. Only checks? In 2025? Sadly, yes. People told me, “I have to order a checkbook just for your school? That’s absurd.” And they were right. Starting this school year, we switched to electronic payments. Now tuition and fees can be paid on your phone—credit card points included. No English info? Also true—at least before. The Japanese content was solid, but English translations (when they existed) were often inconsistent. Now, nearly 100% of our information is fully bilingual and accurate, including internal documents. Is the Board a black box? We heard that too—“I have no idea what the Board does.” Now, I send out regular “Chair’s Reports” summarizing decisions, finances, and updates, and I personally report at parent meetings. At this point, I’d say our transparency rivals Lanikai Beach in Hawaii. Las Vegas Gakuen is the only Japanese Saturday school in Nevada where kids can learn language and culture together. We still have challenges ahead, but stopping halfway isn’t an option. We’ll keep moving forward—quiet retirement or not—and I’d be grateful for your continued warm support for the sake of our kids. |
