| ８月２３日、ラスベガス学園日本語補習校では、２つの特別イベントを開催しました。 ラスベガス警察署 (Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department）と「コミュニティ連携プログラム」、そして元京都府警・大阪消防局員による「護身術ー心構えと実践」講座です。ラスベガス警察署のOfficer Okinaka氏とJessica氏からは、日常生活の中でトラブルに遭遇した際の対処法などを具体的に教えて頂き、活発な質疑応答を通し、実践的な「知恵」をご教授頂きました。コミュニティと積極的に関係を強化し、ラスベガスを安全でより良い街にすべく努力を重ねるラスベガス警察署の働きに、ラスベガス学園日本語補習校を代表し、敬意と感謝の思いをお伝えしました。元京都府警・大阪消防局員による「護身術ー心構えと実践」講座では、訪米中の勝山氏と平田氏が、ラスベガス学園日本語補習校のために無償でご講演くださいました。実践を踏まえた指導は、保護者に加えて、参加した中学３年生と小学２年生クラスの生徒たちにとっても、わかりやすく楽しかったようです。予防が最大の防犯であること、火災現場で家の中が整っていないお家は被害が大きいこと、積極的にあいさつをするコミュニティは、それ自体が防犯になっていること、いざ暴行などの被害に遭った際にはまず逃げる。しかし、それがどうしてもできないときは「生き延びる」ことを最優先にし、その際にとらざるを得なかった「手段」については決して自分を責めないことなどをお話しくださいました。心に触れるメッセージに、涙を流しながら聞いておられる方もいました。ラスベガス学園日本語補習校は文字通り「日本語補習校」ですから、こんなイベントをする必要がないなどの声も聞こえなくはありません。しかしハッキリ言っておきましょう。安全と安心があって初めて勉強もできるのです。家庭においてもガサガサしていたら、子どもは勉強処ではありません。ラスベガス学園日本語補習校は、単なる「日本語補習校」ではなく、ここに関わる方々の安全に、たとえ大海の一滴であっても、できることは積極的に採り入れていきます。 なお、当日、ご多忙の中、在ラスベガス日本国名誉領事 Kathleen Blakely氏、ラスベガス・ジャパンタイムズ編集長 Noriko Carroll氏もご来校下さいました。ラスベガス学園日本語補習校を代表しお礼申しあげます。

On August 23rd, Las Vegas Gakuen Japanese School hosted two special events: a “Community Partnership Program” with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and a “Self-Defense: Mindset and Practice” workshop led by former officers from Kyoto Prefecture Police and Osaka Fire Department. Officer Okinaka and Jessica from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department provided us with practical guidance on how to handle various situations we might encounter in daily life. Through lively Q&A sessions, they shared valuable “wisdom” that we can apply in real situations. On behalf of Las Vegas Gakuen Japanese School, I expressed our deep respect and gratitude to the Las Vegas Police Department for their dedicated efforts to strengthen community relationships and make Las Vegas a safer and better city. The “Self-Defense: Mindset and Practice” workshop was generously conducted free of charge by Mr. Katsuyama and Mr. Hirata, former officers who were visiting the United States. Their hands-on instruction was both engaging and easy to understand, not only for the parents but also for the participating students from our 9th grade and 2nd grade classes. They shared important messages: prevention is the best crime deterrent; homes that are disorganized suffer greater damage in fires; communities where people actively greet each other naturally become safer; and if you ever face assault, your first priority should be to escape. However, if escape is impossible, focus on “survival” above all else, and never blame yourself for whatever means you had to take in that situation. These heartfelt messages moved some attendees to tears. I know that some people question whether Las Vegas Gakuen Japanese School, which is literally a “Japanese supplementary school,” should be hosting such events. Let me be clear: we can only study effectively when we have safety and security. Even at home, children cannot focus on their studies if the environment is chaotic. Las Vegas Gakuen Japanese School is not just a “Japanese supplementary school.” We are committed to actively incorporating anything we can do to support the safety of everyone involved with our community, even if it’s just a drop in the ocean. Additionally, we were honored to welcome Ms. Kathleen Blakely, Honorary Consul of Japan in Las Vegas, and Ms. Noriko Carroll, Editor-in-Chief of Las Vegas Japan Times, who took time from their busy schedules to visit our school that day.
