卒業式式辞/Chairman’s Address for the Graduates

初等部・中等部卒業生の皆さん、日本語日本文化コース修了生の皆さん、おめでとうございます。

皆さんがラスベガス学園に通い始めてから今日までどのくらいの時間が経ったことでしょう。６年間通った人は、２４０回もここに来たことになります。

１０年間通った人は、４００回です。授業だけで４００回ですから、ラスベガス学園の宿題をやったり、漢字練習をした日を含めると、軽く１０００回を超えるでしょう。中には毎日１時間日本語の勉強をした人もいます。そうすると３６５０回です。

ラスベガス学園に初めて来たときから、今日まで、１０００段の階段を登ってきたと想像してみてください。

階段の一段の高さは６インチくらいですから、それほど高くはありません。１段を飛ばして、２段、３段と上がることもできるかも知れません。でも、１段飛ばし、２段飛ばしで、１０００段最後までずっと登り続けることができる人はいないでしょう。結局は、ゴールに達するためには、１０００段を登らなければなりません。

ところで、皆さんの作品が載った文集を読みました。多くの人が、運動会が楽しかった、ベークセールやブックセールが楽しかったと思い出を書いています。２月の運動会は、ラスベガス学園では初めて屋内ジムで開催しました。とても盛りあがって楽しかったですね。ベークセールの朝は、みんなとても嬉しそうで、普段は私を無視して通り過ぎる人もニッコリスマイルで「おはようございます」と言うほどでした。ちゃっかりしているなぁと思いました。

卒業までの階段にはたくさん楽しいことがあります。でも、毎週、運動会やベークセールがあるわけではありません。ほとんどの週は、勉強だけです。宿題がいっぱいあるし、新しい漢字も増えて行き、やってもやっても終わらないと感じたことでしょう。

黙々と階段を登ることの方が多かったと思います。

そしてその結果、今日、皆さんは立派にゴールにたどり着きました。なぜですか？それは、一段一段階段を登り続けたからです。

これから大切なことを言います。しっかり聴いてください。

皆さんはこれからもいろいろな階段を登ることになります。そして、登り始めてみて「ああ、もういやだな」と思うことがあるかも知れません。「この階段は自分には合わない」と思うことがあるかも知れません。そのようなとき、一度立ち止まってじっくり考えてください。

じっくり、じっくり考えるのです。そして、今から戻って他の階段を登る方が良いと確信が得られたら、ちょっと遠回りになっても、その方が良いでしょう。

しかし、じっくり考えても結論が出ないこともあるでしょう。いや、そういうことの方が多いでしょう。今から元に戻って別の階段を登り直すのか、それともこのまま登り続けるのか、悩みます。

悩みに悩んだ上で、今まで登ってきた階段を登り続けることにしたとしましょう。

一段、一段、また登り始めても、やっぱりなんだか他の階段が気になることがあるものです。そのときは、登り続けると決めた自分の決断を信じて、登り続けるのです。

つまずくことがあるかも知れませんが、＊「生ぬるい中途半端という誘惑に負けず、奥深い自分を信じて、誠実に歩き始めた道を忠実に最後まで歩き続けるしかない」のです。（ハビエル・ガラルダ著「自己愛とエゴイズム」講談社現代新書より）

皆さんには、その信じる価値がある「奥深い自分」、つまり自信があります。今日、皆さんは卒業証書を受けとりました。これを持っている人は、つらいことがあっても、くじけそうなことがあっても、最後まで頑張ったという証明書です。ラスベガス学園が「この卒業証書を持っている人は、一生懸命努力ができる人です」と証明するものなのです。

皆さん、自信を持ちなさい。自信は自分を信じることができると言うことです。あなた方は、それを証明したのです。ラスベガス学園もそれを証明します。

これからも、皆さんはいろいろな目標に向かって階段を登ることでしょう。どうぞ、そのときに「ラスベガス学園で頑張って、自分が作りあげた自信」を思い出して下さい。

そして、もう一つ。皆さんが今日ここまで来ることができたのは、仲間がいたからです。自分一人だったら、もっと簡単に諦めていたかも知れません。でも、自分と同じように頑張っている仲間がいると思うと勇気が出たことでしょう。皆さんのためにたくさんの犠牲を払って頑張ってくださったお家の方もいます。先生方もあなた方のことを自分の子どものように大切に見守ってくださいました。

これからも、誰かが自分を信じて見ていてくれると思って下さい。信じる価値のあるあなたを、あなた以外にも信じてくれる人がいますから。

最後に、保護者の皆さま。

おめでとうございます。皆さまも今日までよく頑張りました。私は保護者の皆さまに表彰状を差し上げたいほどです。親だからと言ってみんながみんなできることではありません。現地校に加えて補習校。やったことのない人には想像もつかないことでしょう。本当によく頑張りましたね。皆さまは、最高の親子共同プロジェクトを成功させたのです。お金では買えないとてつもない資産を、お子様のために作って上げたのです。金メダルです。心から敬意を表します。

卒業生の皆さん、自信を持って新たな一歩を踏み出して下さい。そして、今日、クラスメートとお別れする際に、これから歌う仰げば尊し２番の歌詞にある「身を立て、名を上げ、やよ励めよ」とお互いにエールを送って下さい。

卒業生の皆さん、保護者の皆さま、ラスベガス学園日本語補習校を代表し、皆さまの卒業を、ここに宣言し、祝福します。

◎この式辞は、私が社会人になりたての頃に出逢ったハビエル・ガラルダ（上智大学教授・イエズス会神父）著「自己愛とエゴイズム」講談社現代新書に深い感銘を受け、その後、３０年以上にわたり生徒たちにも伝え、自分自身の指針にして来たことを基にしたものです。文中＊部分は、引用です。

Congratulations to all the graduates of the Elementary and Junior High Courses, and to all those successfully completed the Japanese Language and Culture Course curriculum.

I wonder how long it has been since you started attending Las Vegas Gakuen; for those of you who have attended for 6 years, you have been here 240 times. If you have been with us for 10 years, you have been here 400 times. If you include the days when you did your homework and practiced Kanji at home, the number would easily exceed 1000 times. Some of you studied Japanese for an hour every day. That would amount to 3,650 times.

Imagine that from the time you first came to Las Vegas Gakuen until today, you have climbed 1000 steps.

You may be able to skip one step and go up two or three more. But no one can skip one or two steps and keep climbing all the way up to the end of the 1,000 steps. In the end, you have to climb 1,000 steps to reach the goal.

By the way, I read your essays. Many of you wrote about your memories of the fun you had at the Sports Day, the bake sale and the book sale. The Sports Day in February was the first time Las Vegas Gakuen held it in an indoor gym. It was very exciting and fun. On the morning of the bake sale, everyone looked so happy that even some of you who normally ignore me and walk past me said “Good morning” with a smiley face.

There are many fun things to do on the stairway to graduation. But we do not have those fun events every single week. There is a lot of homework, new kanji characters are added for you to learn, and you may have been overwhelmed.

Still, you continued climbing up the stairway.

And as a result, today you have all reached your goal with distinction. Why? Because you climbed the stairs step by step.

You will be climbing various stairs in the future. And when you start climbing, you may think, “Oh, I don’t want to do this anymore,” or “This is not for me.” At such times, please pause for a while and think.

Take your time and think it over. And if you are convinced that it would be better to go back now and climb another staircase, even if it is a bit of a detour, that would be better.

However, there will be times when you cannot come to a conclusion even after careful consideration. In fact, that is more likely to happen. You will wonder whether you should go back and climb another staircase now, or whether you should keep on climbing.

Suppose, after much deliberation, you decide to continue climbing the staircase you have been climbing.

Even if you start climbing again, one step at a time, there are times when you are still somewhat concerned about the other stairs. At that time, you must keep climbing, trusting your decision.

You may stumble at times, but *”You must not give in to the lukewarm temptation to be half-hearted, but trust in your deepest self and faithfully continue walking the path you have faithfully begun to walk until the end. (From “Self-Love and Egoism” by Javier Garralda, Kodansha Gendai Shinsho)

You all have a “deepest self,” a self-confidence that is worth believing in. Today you have received your diploma. It is a certificate that says that you have worked hard to the end, no matter how hard things may have been, no matter how you may have felt like you were going to fail. It is a certificate from Las Vegas Gakuen that says, “This diploma means that you are a person who can work hard to achieve his/her goal.”

Have confidence, everyone. Confidence means that you can believe in yourself. You have proved it. Las Vegas Gakuen proves it too.

I am sure that you will continue to climb the stairs toward your various goals. When you do, please remember the confidence that you have built up by working hard at Las Vegas Gakuen.

And one more thing. The reason you have all made it this far today is because of your friends. If you were on your own, you might have given up more easily. However, I am sure that thinking that there are others who are working just as hard as you did gave you the courage to do so. Your parents sacrificed a lot for you and worked hard to let you come to Las Vegas Gakuen. Your teachers also took care of you as if you were their own children.

Please continue to believe that someone is watching over you and believing in you. You are worth believing in.

Finally, to the parents.

Congratulations to all of you. You have all worked very hard until today. I would like to give you all a certificate of commendation. Not everyone can do this just because they are a parent. A supplementary school in addition to the local school. If you have never done this before, you can’t imagine what it must be like. You really did a great job. You have all successfully completed the best parent-child joint project. You have created a tremendous asset for your child that money cannot buy. I am proud of you.

To the graduates, I wish you all the best as you take a new step forward with confidence. And when you say goodbye to your classmates today, please encourage each other to “Stand up for yourselves, make a name for yourselves, and encourage each other” as in the lyrics of the second verse of the song “Aogeba Toutoshi” that we are about to sing.

The graduates, I hereby proclaim and congratulate you on your graduation from the Las Vegas Gakuen.

Javier Garralda, and a Jesuit priest and professor at Sophia University in Tokyo, which deeply impressed me, and which I have passed on to my students and used as my own guideline for over 30 years since then.
