| ラスベガス学園での授業は週１回だけです。行事を含めて年間４０週の授業をこなします。この限られた時間の中で、生徒たちにとって理解しやすく、得るものが多い授業にするために、教員はもちろん、裏方で支える事務局スタッフも、常に頭をフル回転させて考えています。
自前の校舎をもたないラスベガス学園は、教室で使用するものや、オフィスの機器や備品すべてを、毎週、倉庫から運び出し、授業で支障なく使えるように設置する必要があります。倉庫から、教職員室として使用するカフェテリアまで、台車を使って何往復もして備品を運ばねばなりません。 Wifiがつながるように設置し、プリンターをコンセントに差し込み・・・普通なら、置きっぱなしにしておけるものも、ここではそうはいきません。 教員が到着する前に、教室を見回り、パソコンや電子ボードの設定をし、当日配布するものは、クラスごとに大きなテーブルに一目でわかるように置いておきます。 これだけでも軽く１時間半はかかる作業です。これをいつもたった２人の事務局スタッフがこなしています。 生徒が保護者に送られてセキュリティの駐車場に入ってくる時は、数名の教員も加わり、アクシデントがないように、一人ひとりの生徒を車のドアのところで保護者からお預かりします。 私は先日、所用で朝から出校しこの様子を見ていましたが、その作業の物理的な量だけではなく、神経を尖らせてあたらなければいけないことの多さに驚かされました。 授業中は一息つけるのかと思いきや、保護者のボランティア・ヘルパーの皆様と一緒に、校舎の内外を見回ったり、訪問者対応、保護者連絡、教員のサポート、印刷物の処理、納入金の処理・・・数え上げたらキリがありません。 保護者の皆様にも、多岐にわたるご協力をいただいて、なんとか１日の授業日を運営しています。 授業が終わると、今度は後片付け。校舎の見回り。簡単な清掃。セキュリティの確認・・・。 事務局スタッフは、お弁当をもってきていることがありますが、実際には食べる時間などほとんどなく、おにぎりを一口かじって終わりという日の方が多いようです。 |
Classes at Las Vegas Gakuen meet only once a week for 40 weeks of the year. In this limited time, not only the teachers, but also the office staff who support the school behind the scenes, are constantly thinking of ways to make the classroom experience the best it can be for the students.
Since Las Vegas Gakuen does not have its own school building, all of the classroom and office equipment and supplies must be brought out of storage each week and set up so that they are ready for use in the classroom. The equipment must be moved on a cart from the storage room to the cafeteria, which is used as a faculty/staff room. Wifi needs to be set up, printers need to be plugged in…things that can normally be left in the office cannot be done here. Before the teachers arrive, the staff go through the classrooms, set up the computers and electronic boards, and place the items to be distributed that day on a large table in the cafeteria for each class to see at a glance. This alone is a task that can easily take two hours. It is always done by just two staff members. When students are dropped off by their parents and come into the secure parking lot, several faculty members also join them and take each student from the parents at the car door to make sure they are safe. I recently had to go to the school early in the morning and watched this happen and was amazed at not only the physical amount of work involved, but also the meticulousness required. I thought the office staff would be able to take a break during classes, but with the help of parent volunteers, they have to make rounds inside and outside the school building, deal with visitors, contact parents, assist teachers, process printed materials, process payments…the list goes on and on. Needless to say, without the help of parents/volunteers, we couldn’t run a full day of classes. After class, it’s time to clean up. We need to get all the equipment back into storage. The office staff sometimes bring their own lunch boxes, but most of the time they don’t have time to eat, and often end the day with a bite of onigiri (rice ball). |
